Understanding Linux File/Folder “Group” and “Owner” (CHOWN)

The "owner" is typically the user who created a file/folder, but any user can be designated the "owner" at any time.

All users belong to at least one "group" (e.g. "administrator"). A group can be provided certain permissions that override file permissions. What's more, any given file may grant certain permissions to members of a "group" that they otherwise wouldn't posses.
